Support Veteran owned Businesses

We are all familiar with the holidays designated to celebrate and commemorate those who have served and sacrificed so much to protect our country and our freedoms.  Recognizing our veterans at these times is wonderful but many often go unnoticed once they return from military service.  These brave men and woman blend into society, many start businesses of their own employing other veterans.

Supporting veteran owned businesses is good business, your wallet has a voice. Next time you are looking to source merchandise consider patronizing one of these companies.

This month we highlight one of these veteran owned businesses, Safety Technology.

Founded in 1986 by Michael Gravette and his wife Nancy, Safety Technology believes that every person has the right to self-defense. They support this right by providing a full selection of non-lethal self-defense devices, hidden cameras, survival gear and surveillance systems through their Network of Authorized Dealers.

Michael joined the Air Force in 1967 and was selected for Intelligence School, later given Top Secret Clearance, then upgraded to SSIR; Super Sensitive Information Restricted. In 1969, at Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base in Saigon, Michael was responsible for reviewing film taken by reconnaissance planes. He would look for troop movement, truck convoys, hidden AAA sites (anti-aircraft artillery) and SAM sites (Surface to Air Missile) that could shoot down our pilots. Michael’s intelligence reports were not only used by the Air Force, but also the Army, Navy, Marines and the Pentagon.  Michael served his country well, and came home to a country divided, definitely not to a hero’s welcome. Incidentally, little did he know he would be in the “spy business” someday!

How Effective is Pepper Spray?

I found this interesting article about the strength of OC Pepper Spray, this comes directly from the blog at SafetyTechnology.org.  Lots of great information below and more on their site.

———-

The first thing for you to understand about wholesale pepper spray products is what makes them effective. Most manufacturers use Scoville Heat Units (SHU) to indicate the strength of their spray. However, when you buy raw pepper you can buy it at any SHU you want.

For instance, one competitor says his spray use 5.3 million SHU of Oleoresin Capsicum (OC) resin. Read further and he states he has a 2% formula.  That means that his pepper product’s formula has 2% X 5.3 million or 106,000 SHU.

Another states, “We add a small amount of pure capsaicin (which is well over 5,000,000 SHU) to boost our CHR to over 230,000.” If you do the math (230,000/5,000,000) you get 4.6% of OC in their formula.

Secondary Market, the Road to Profiting in Wholesale

Every year over half a million businesses are created in the United States.  Approximately one third of these start-ups are retail businesses.  A large portion of these businesses will focus on the “Secondary Market”. This marketplace offers great advantages and high rewards but you need to be well prepared.  Finding the right supplier to source products from is critical.

Secondary Market products consist of Closeouts, Surplus Goods, Customer Returns, Liquidated Items, and any product that is not sold after its initial manufacture. Many companies specialize in secondary market purchases and reselling.  Resellers might experience some level of unsellable merchandise in these types of wholesale orders but not always.  Retailers will be hard pressed to find a cheaper source of merchandise than secondary market items and these products can be a great way to turn a profit.

Working within the Secondary Market is more than knowing just your product niche; you also have to know how to sell products with a variety of quality conditions.  Getting creative is essential for moving not only the good products but also the less desirable ones.  A good strategy is to start small by purchasing a few pallets and working your way up to buying full truckloads.  If buying smaller loads is an obstacle, you might need to consider your source. Remember, where you get your products is just as important as what you get, especially when sourcing surplus goods.

To gain additional insight into this industry we spoke with Michael Lawrence of DirectLiquidation.com.  His company represents one of the fastest growing marketplaces for Surplus Merchandise.

In the past, online liquidators pawned off “as is” and “salvage-grade” merchandise to buyers as the best value available in the wholesale marketplace. Product misrepresentation, low-grade items, and a narrow assortment of tier-2 or 3 brands were commonplace. The ability to purchase small loads or retail-ready products was virtually unheard of. In addition, if you were “lucky” enough to win one of their auctions you could expect a further 7-15% “buyer premium” charge for the privilege of buying their junk inventory. – Michael Lawrence

Michael went on to explain how Direct Liquidation can solve these problems, they offer buyers an incredible range of products, tier-1 brands sourced from their exclusive relationships with top national retailers and manufacturers.  Smaller loads are available so buyers can test customer demand without depleting resources.  Having an ability to test demand could be the difference between a good bottom line and a bad one.

Large liquidators buy huge volumes of surplus merchandise and returns for literally pennies on the dollar. They process and sort this inventory and make it available to the smaller buyer. Generally liquidation lots are sold “as-is, meaning there is no guarantee of lot quality and usually no return on purchase. Understandably, this comes with the deeply discounted prices on these lots, typically well below wholesale. But “as-is, doesn’t necessarily mean poor quality.  Frequently a large portion of the inventory is in new or like-new condition.  Fact is, buyers can and do make a healthy profit reselling this merchandise.

Batten down the hatches – Black Friday is coming!

Some are starting to smile while others cringe…here it comes again, Black Friday.

Referred to as the creme de la creme of buying and selling, and it’s only a week away.

Adobe’s Digital Index shows that last year’s Black Friday set the bar high, with consumers spending $2.4 billion online, an almost 24% increase from the prior year. This year, according to some estimates, that spend line is increasing even more. Especially with e-commerce continuing to grow in the double digits, something it has done for several years in a row now.

Sporting Goods and The Gun Industry

There are, according to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (PDF), more than 58,000 gunshops in this country.  Many of those gun shops are owned and operated privately.  United States companies that manufacture, distribute and sell sporting firearms, ammunition and supplies are an important part of our country’s economy. Manufacturers of firearms, ammunition and supplies, along with the companies that sell and distribute these products, provide over 150,000 well paying jobs in America and pay significant amounts in tax to the state and Federal governments.  Although just a part of the Sporting Goods industry, sales derived from handguns and rifles provide a much needed revenue within today’s difficult economy.

The United States has over 14 million hunters (a conservative count). The Sporting Goods Industry provides hunters access to an entire assortment of hunting and sport shooting accessories.  Items that include decoy animals, tree stands, special hiking boots, waterproof clothing, camouflage clothing, knives, animal call whistles, animal scents, practice targets and the list goes on and on.  Many major retailers have entire areas of their stores dedicated entirely to Sporting Goods.

Looking for Sporting Goods suppliers? GetThatWholesale.com offers free access to these suppliers.

Britain MORE dangerous than U.S.A

Many Americans screaming for gun control will be surprised to learn recent statistics place Britain as THE MOST DANGEROUS country in ALL of Europe, even surpassing South Africa.  The facts show Britain to be far more dangerous than the “gun slinging” United States.  Although these numbers were just released many proponents of the 2nd Amendment have been well aware of these facts for quite sometime.  So why aren’t more people aware of these facts? The answer is simple, those yelling for all the gun-grabbing have been backed by a media blitz against one of this countries greatest and most cherished freedoms.

The banning of weapons is not new, several countries have passed laws taking guns from the hands of their citizens.  The UK and China both ban private ownership of guns.  Australia, Japan, Singapore and Canada have all passed very strict gun laws limiting gun ownership.  Against popular belief removing guns entirely does not reduce crime, in fact in all cases it has dramatically increased crime.  Criminals are well aware the guppy pool has gotten bigger, they become emboldened knowing they have the upper hand.  The gun laws imposed only effect those who follow the laws in the first place, criminals are not getting finger printed or filing paperwork to own guns.  Criminals get their guns they way they always have, illegally and on the black market.  Let’s face it, if criminals are the only ones holding guns the population is literally at their mercy.

Here are some interesting facts to consider:

  • The UK has the second highest overall crime rate in the EU.
  • It has a higher homicide rate than most of our western European neighbors, including France, Germany, Italy and Spain.
  • The UK has the fifth highest robbery rate in the EU.
  • It has the fourth highest burglary rate and the highest absolute number of burglaries in the EU, with double the number of offenses than recorded in Germany and France.
So the next time you hear someone say the United States is more dangerous than “Gun Free” countries you can correct them and hopefully educate them that the facts show it is CLEARLY MUCH SAFER 🙂

Obama Re-election already causing closures and job layoffs

Within days of President Obama’s re-election businesses announce layoffs and even closures. “These cut backs are due to Obama’s re-election” stated one Arizona employer who reduced his staff by 22 employees.  Other businesses followed with similar actions and noted the fear of an even slower economy with no real change.  With no end in sight for Obamacare business owners are adjusting accordingly in an effort to make ends meet, unfortunately this means more people added to the unemployment lines.  These are real world consequences within days of a re-election, the fear things will continue to get worse is very real within the marketplace.
